The Armação de Pêra Fortress

In the 16th century, attacks from pirates and corsairs were common and a prosperous fishing-boat owner sponsored the building of a small fortress on top of a hill overlooking the sea to defend the fishermans business.
The fortress was rebuilt during the reign of the King El Rey Dom João III. It was remodeled during the Wars of the Restoration and again in the eighteenth century, when it was built the small chapel named as Capela de Santo António (St. Anthony Chapel) or Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos (Our Lady of Sorrows Chapel) believed to protect the fishermen at sea.Image Credits: ubichan
